The Truth that sets us free

UV 405/10,000 The Truth that sets us free John 8:32 Joh 8 v 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free The truth referred to in this uni-verse is the Truth or truth with a capital T. Truth is personified in Jesus. He said, “ I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father except through me.” The Jews worshipped Jehovah the Father with fear and awe. But, Jesus set us free from the spirit of fear in our relationship with God and gave us the spirit of kinship with the Father that we are free to call Him, “ Abba Father.” This is the first and most important freedom that we gain through our faith in Christ- a personal and most intimate relationship with our loving Father who breathed our souls into our lives. He now will breathe life back into our souls. We experience true freedom. It is said, knowledge is power but wisdom is liberty. When we know Christ as our personal redeemer, we become wise and free indeed. The truth also sets us free from the law of sin and death. We are given eternal life from the moment we know Christ. We are freed from the power of sin, that is death though we are not freed from the presence of sin as long as we live on this planet. We ae freed from the penalty of sin. We are freed from the fear of death that haunts every mortal being. We are freed from the fear of failure, the fear of curses and the fear of the future or the fear of the unknown. We are freed from the law of “ hamartia” or shortcoming in our being, thinking, feeling, doing and accomplishing. We are free to pursue perfection and to excel in spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, professional and physical terms. There is a poignant line in the movie, “ The Sound of Music,” “ Somewhere in my miserable past, I must have done something good.” We are set free from this feeling that every thing good or bad that happens in our lives is due to some good or evil done by us in the past. We are set free from this “karmic” captivity. We are set free from fatalism or the lack of a sense of control over our own lives. We realize that the Almighty and loving God is in absolute control of our lives. The third freedom we have in Christ is that we are freed by studying and applying the law of liberty that is the Word of God. The Word of God is the truth. It is the truth revealed , verse by verse, precept by precept that sets us free. We are freed from our anxieties and worries as the Lord feeds us from His Word. He assures us of provision, guidance and protection. The fourth freedom is the freedom that the indwelling Holy Spirit gives us by virtue of the joy, peace and leading He gives us from moment to moment. The Holy Spirit is called the spirit of liberty. Through the agency of the Holy Spirit we have the freedom of fellowship with the Trinity. The words, “ the truth shall make you free,” implies that the process of knowing the truth and being set free is a lifelong process. Prateep V Philip
