The River of Life

Eze 47:3 And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles. “ The Bible” , someone said so beautifully ,” is so shallow a child can wade through it and it is so deep a theologian can drown in it.” Jesus is seen in this vision and in a similar vision in the book of Revelation as a man who holds a reed or a measuring line in His hand. He measures the waters through which we pass. He leads us first ankle deep, then knee deep, then waist deep and then shoulder deep but He will not let the water pass over our heads. The depth referred to in this uni-verse is both the depth of the truth and insight of the Word as well as the depth of our experience in the light of the Word in our everyday world. Just as the ancient Israelites were taken through many waters: the water of the Red Sea and the water of the Jordan, we too in our individual walk do pass through many waters. The Lord measures our faith as we pass through these waters. He also measures the depth of the water to know how much we can endure. The water is also a reference to the “living water” of the Holy Spirit and the Word. As we grow in faith, the Lord takes us to greater depths in our knowledge and understanding of the Word and the experience of the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Spirit is an experience of complete immersion in the Holy Spirit. After this experience, streams of living water of joy, peace, hope and love will begin to flow from our hearts and lives. The gifting of the Holy Spirit in our lives will lead to many fruit trees to grow on the river bank whose fruit will be spiritual food for the spiritually hungry and whose leaves would be healing for the spiritually and physically sick.
